Developers using GitHub Copilot finished a task 55.8% faster

What happened

Microsoft Research ran a controlled experiment where developers implemented an HTTP server in JavaScript. The group using GitHub Copilot completed the task 55.8% faster than the control group.

That doesn't mean every developer becomes 55.8% faster with AI - the result was specific to that task. But it's a measurable signal that AI tools can materially change developer output.

The business problem

A company shouldn't just hand every developer a coding assistant without knowing what it's actually used for, whether the generated code is correct, and where the real ROI shows up.

Why it worked

  • Measure before and after rollout, don't assume a universal productivity gain
  • Check for IP and licensing risk in AI-generated code
  • Track what data reaches the coding tool
  • Roll out to teams where the ROI case is proven first
