Amazon warned staff after employees leaned on ChatGPT for work
What happened
Amazon warned employees not to enter confidential information into ChatGPT after finding staff using it for work, and encouraged them to use internal tools instead of public models.
The case points to a bigger issue than ChatGPT itself: a company can want employees to use AI while still needing to prevent each person from independently choosing the tool and deciding how company data gets processed.
The business problem
There was no control over where company information ended up or which tools were being used to process it.
What could have helped
- Build a catalog of approved tools
- Set clear rules for what data can and can't go into external AI
- Offer a sanctioned enterprise AI option
- Monitor for shadow AI use
